Social Media Hate

Social Networking Sites are usually thought of as just a fun way to connect with people. However, recently these sites have been being used to spread racism, and terror. The number of hate sites on Social sites such as MySpace and FaceBook increased twenty percent since last year. Does this mean that the number of people who hate has gone up? I do not think so. Social media sites just make it easier to hate because your true identity can be hidden.

When people feel they can say or do whatever they want and their true identity will be kept secret, they are more apt to do horrible things. People who hate have always hid behind some type of cover. Throughout the years these types of people have used whatever technology was available to them to spread their words of hate. Social media sites are just their newest choice.

So should these sites be censored because of a few who use them for hate? I do not think that any media should be censored. The best way to handle people who hate and hide themselves is just monitor their activities to make sure that they do not harm anyone. By making a big deal about what they are doing, their message is spread to more people and that is their goal. By just not accepting their message of hate, they lose.

  1. Personally I'm getting sick of social media sites in general and I think they are pushing people further away from "actual" social interactions (i.e. face to face, even over-the-phone). The internet as a whole has always been used as a free-speech hate service, so with this being adapted more to the newer realm of social media websites it's not surprising.

  2. very interesting post, I also believe that people post these things only cause their identity can stay hidden and know one can really find out who these people are. But in fact when it comes down to it the people that post this disgraceful things will never openly say it in front of people they aimed the hatred or terror for.

  3. Great post Leticia and a good topic. I agree with you that sites shouldn't be censored and I believe that people posting hate will only show their true ignorance. Truth is whenever I read things like that it just makes me thankful that I'm open minded to others peoples beliefs, races, morals, etc... and my guess is that while these things may get attention from narrow minded individuals, educated and open people pay no attention to this crap. It's just another type of soap box for haters to spew their garbage.

  4. Its unfortunate that people are still acting this way. Can't we all just get along. I agree with Adam here that educated people don't pay to much attention to this crap. Social sites are a very useful way to network and people that act this way hurt everyone.

  5. I hope it doesn't go the route of monitoring and what not. I feel like we already are being watched by our managers and future contacts. People get in trouble because of their facebook daily. Due to the pictures that everyone can see and comments.
