It’s a little late in the semester to post about this but it may help future IS449W students especially if Professor Drake finds this useful and decides to point it out. I was actually going to blog about this a long time ago but with everything else going on it seems to have slipped my mind. Anyway, I don’t know how many know that there is another emich server that can be used for group web projects.
The nice thing about this server is it allows every group member to have access to the group site rather than having one member use his/her people.emich.edu site. I suppose that could also be a downside because one member could potentially overwrite what someone else has done. However, I did not find that to be a problem when I last used yipe.
This site seems to have all the information contained on the people.emich.edu page but it is more to the point. So, if you know what you need, software wise, you can just go to yipe.emich.edu and download it: filezilla, Winscp, Fugu, putty, MacSSH etc.
The people.emich.edu site is a little less to the point and doesn't seem to have all the download links that yipe has.

Terry,
ReplyDeleteYour right this would have been nice to know about not only early in this semester, but also for other classes. I have used my people account in various classes and I think it might have been easier to have a group page.
Terry, your post here on Yipe intrigued me, but I'm confused by the site. It appears to be Linux-based...or at least command line-based in someway. How do you just setup your account?
ReplyDeleteMatt, I must admit I did not setup the site for our IS247 project. One of my group members had to email Professor Gibson with his student information who then sent that information to the yipe administrator. The account was created with one username / password that we all used. We did not need to do any command line stuff.
ReplyDeleteInteresting. This is the first time I hear about this new hosting service from our school. It would have definitely make our work easier when we worked on the project, but I think Google groups worked just fine.
ReplyDeleteI wish I knew about this server. It could have saved a lot of headache in my group. Although I do see the problem with it, if some was working on a project and accidently deleted something, it could potentially hurt the whole group.
