I became aware of the Eclipse IDE maybe a little more than a year ago. The IDE has a very popular plug-in architecture. I was looking for a development environment to make a mobil game. I have never made a game of any kind previously, but I figured it's java. How hard can it really be?
The first interesting item I found was a video showing how to use Illustrator to make graphics for the application. http://tv.adobe.com/watch/open-screen-project/creating-graphics-optimized-for-blackberry/.
Blackberry has a wealth of information on their site. I downloaded a plug-in for Eclipse. I found that you can get any plug-in for Eclipse to work by simply copying the contents of the plug-in's folders to Eclipse' plug-in and features folders. This approach has worked in both Windows (Vista) and Linux (Fedora 11). http://na.blackberry.com/eng/developers/resources/videolibrary.jsp#tab_ddetail_subtab_jde
The Blackberry JDE plug-in has to be configured to work in the Eclipse workspace. There are stimulator for all the various blackberry phones. Once you compile your code if everything is configured correctly a stimulator starts automatically.
Programming for the phone is easier than I thought, Blackberry has made a number of APIs available. There is a small cost involved to receive the keys necessary to make the APIs accessible from within Eclipse.

Dane,
ReplyDeleteCool post. Did you end up developing a game? If so what did it do?
Pretty cool post. It is huge because it is a making game aps for phones is growing industry. I have never created a game myself but I would like to when I have more time.

Dane,
ReplyDeleteI recently purchased the Blackberry Storm2 so this is good to know. There are so many apps and opportunities for being productive on the go. Its a little overwhelming so it's a matter of playing around until you discover (or write) an app that works for you.
I love they have open source applications now. Just remember when the only apps were a calculator or blackjack. Now apps are taking over. I would love the see the statistics of black berry vs, iphone apps.
ReplyDeleteI have always thought about creating my own app for the iPhone or Blackberries. Thanks for posting I am going to download and see what I can come up with. I have a few ideas in my head right now.
ReplyDeleteDane,
ReplyDeleteThanks for the info. I have a Blackberry myself, might be fun to play around and create my own app or two for it.
It would be interesting to see what kind of app we could create. Great post and thanks for the info
