Microsoft Silverlight

After Colin showed us the features of Google Wave, I was wondering if there is something from Microsoft in their pipeline.
Microsoft goes another way. With their Silverlight framework they pursue the goal of providing a platform for developers to create interactive websites and applications easily.
Silverlight is, on the one hand a framework, and on there hand a browser plug-in. This allows the usage of Silverlight based software for user with different operating systems and different browsers.

Silverlight 3 is a framework that supports .NET language and developing tools, JavaScript, streaming technology for a lot of media files and other known techniques. The development tools simplify the generation and the collaboration on applications or websites.
Silverlight allows the handling of browser applications as desktop-applications and reduces the transferred amount of data between server and client.

Although the framework and the tools are not comparable with Google’s Wave, it allows developers to create software that is might compete against the new Google-Software.
This framework allows developers to create software that will be the next step to something like Web 3.0: Browser-Applications that can be installed locally, new streaming technologies, DeepZoom and so on.

There are some very interesting movies in this source:

“The Visual Kitchen” shows the mighty development tools
“Silverlight 3 & Expression 3 Launch Event” -> “Silverlight Momentum: Real World Examples” presents some Silverlight based websites.
Other videos shows the development of some websites and applications.

I saw them and really enjoyed them. Have fun!

  1. Jassin,

I would classify Silverlight in the same genre as Adobe Flash, rich browser plug-ins. Adobe has a couple other plug-ins under development, called AIR and FLEX. Should be interesting to see which of them gains the most in popularity.
